Miss World 1953
- an amalgam of news reports -
Luscious Denise Perrier, of France, won the title of Miss World of 1953 in a close beauty contest over 14 other international beauties.
Six judges gave the unanimous nod to Denise.
A few days earlier, she had shrugged her shapely shoulders and said, “I haven’t a ghost of a chance.”
First prize was $1,400 and a silver bowl. The girls were judged on sex appeal, dress, deportment and intelligence.
Second in the beauty contest was Miss Greece, Alexandra Ladikou, with Miss Egypt, Marina Papaelia, third, and Miss Ceylon, Manel Illangakoon, fourth.
Miss Ceylon was very unhappy when the time came to put on a bathing suit - she’s used to a sarong back home.
Discord came from third place Marina Papaelia, 20-year-old Miss Egypt - who has a 36-inch bust and a fast line in broken English.
“She very pretty girl,” she said of the winner. “But she don’t look so good in zee mornings. These beauty competitions, they all the same. I been Miss Egypt two times, so I know.”
The flashing-eyed Egyptian beauty said she thought first prize should have gone to Miss U.S.A. - 23-year-old Mary Kemp Griffin.
Miss Germany, a 20-year-old model from Dusseldorf, said before the contest: “I do so want to win - but I don’t think I will. The other girls are all so much prettier than me.”

MORE ABOUT DENISE PERRIER:Denisse Perrier (born 1935) is a French model and actress. She now goes by "Denise Perrier Lanfranchi." Denise Perrier of France was an ordinary convent schoolgirl prior to being thrust into the limelight as Miss World. When she competed against 14 other contestants, she wore make-up for the first time in her life. Her natural charm and élan won over the judges. Perrier was the third person to be chosen as Miss World in 1953 October 19 , representing France; the same year that France also won the Miss Universe pageant by Christiane Martel.
After winning the title she went on to model and had a few parts in television and cinema productions before moving on to roles in local government in her native France.
Perrier has done little acting. Her most memorable scene is an uncredited appearance in the 1971 James Bond movie, Diamonds Are Forever.
After leaving her modeling career, Perrier became active in local government in her native France. She was one of the judges at the 2005 Miss World contest.
When asked on stage during Miss world 2005 by host Tim Vincent whether coming back to the pageant brought great memories for her, Ms. Denise said: "You know, it's a wonderful souvenir. When I was 18, long time ago, in '53. And it's a magic moment because I was a boarding school three months before. And suddenly I was Miss World. Wonderful souvenir."
Denisse Perrier was judge in Miss World 2005 and 2010
