Why Janine Tugonon lost to Olivia Culpo

Postby poker_man » Tue Jun 02, 2020 2:45 am

Janine has always been regarded as the "real" Miss Universe 2012 to many pageant fans (most especially Pinoys of course) but watching these videos proved why she lost and why she is nothing more than an opportunist.

After disrespecting her boyfriend in national television by saying that she admitted to flirting with The Script frontman Danny while she and her boyfriend were being interviewed, she immediately left to the US to pursue a career.

Image

In this recent Zoom interview, she mentioned that always wanted to pursue a career in Europe and the US more than anything. She continuously spoke in English (faux accent) as the Pinoy host talked to her in Tagalog. She also mentioned here that Trump does play favorites, which confirmed her statements in an old interview where she said she felt the "special treatment" and that she knew surely that she would make the next cut every time the camera panned towards her during the call outs.

Image

Janine also posted how proud she is to finally get a Permanent Residency in the US. :%)) :%)) :%))

I used to really root for her as she was my top fave in Bb. Pilipinas 2012 (the very fan-friendly MJ Lastimosa is a sentimental favorite of mine but Janine is a far better package at Miss Universe obviously) but everything Janine projects then and now proves why people are annoyed with Filipinos in general. She tries way too hard to act smart by faking an accent (notice how she continuously speaks in English when she is being asked in Tagalog) and unlike Pia and Catriona, she isn't very diplomatic in expressing her ambitions and sentiments. Don't get me wrong, wanting to be an American isn't something I would judge her for, I mean, Catriona "abandoned" her Australian roots just to represent a stronger sash and eventually win Miss Universe, but there's just something annoying with how Janine comes across as, she has a very entitled demeanor that is really off-putting.

(I will not dwell on her issues post pageant)

For the question why she lost?
Its the ugly Barrazza gown that didnt give Janine the maximum confidence during the last look.

Ghurl her being an 'opportunistic b*tch' was not part of the judging criteria during that year. I mean, ano namang pake ng mga judges noon sa issue nya with her then boyfriend? Miss Universe contestants are judged based on their finals night performances, not because of whatever post-pageant behavior they display.

I see that you don't like what she has become after her Miss Universe stint, but give credit where credit is due. Her Miss Universe finish was solely because of her efforts that finals night

Yes, having been granted a green card is a personal gain especially if she worked hard for it and paid her dues legally by employing a lawyer to assist her successfully. That's why in the free world, we can aim as far as heaven we can reach and as far as we would see in the universe. If you are just sitting and lying around in bed waiting for a peanut to drop in your face, you're just a hippopotamus that would only live for 5 years but at all times will be soaked in dirt because you won't do anything in life. She really performed well even after her first runner up finish because she wanted to be productive all the time with her professional and personal status. What else you can ask for more from her eventhough no one pushes her to do so but she did on her own merit what she had to do in life. She weighed so much far beyond other else's expectations.

Lol this post is ridiculous, judging her loss from her life AFTER Miss Universe? Please. You just don't like her. Period.

Janine lost to Olivia because she was robbed. Fight me.
Olivia never in a million years deserved to win.

By performance, Janine won over Olivia by miles. By beauty, Olivia wins. If the typical MUO gives crown to whoever answer it the best in Miss Universe final night then Janine indeed was ROBBED!

Janine is beautiful even after her Miss Universe stint. She did her best during the finals night and she carried that mediocre gown (i am being nice here. LOL!) well. I think there was just something with Olivia that the judges saw. She is pretty though.
And i admire Janine for working hard for her dreams. I don't see any problem with it.

Olivia's question was blah... she did the best she could with such a lame question. Still, it's not what she said but how she said it. She's very charismatic, charming and natural. That's a win mix.

In my opinion Olivia won because she was far more beautiful and had more charisma, that's it.

I would have to say that Janine's performance was the product of practice makes perfect presentation than the charismatic and natural execution of Olivia in Miss Universe. But being 1st runner is not a bad thing to ask for with Janine. Nowadays, with Janine's hardwork and determination, she is miles miles away from her league.

Not true, watch the final Q&A again. she even frowned and u can see it on her face that she made a contradictory ending to her initial answer. she was confused to her own answer and that's already coming from an english speaking born individual.

when you speak without pause, it means your speech is memorized.

that was a drama that she didn’t want to talk about because that’s her family member she was talking about. she was very confident

Janine overcooked her practice make perfect presentation while Olivia was natural, charismatic and anything goes attitude. That's how The Philippines prepare their beauty pageant contestants, they overkill the competition to make sure they'll win. I like Ms Margarta Moran's win in 1973 because of her natural bearing with effortless execution since the time she got off the plane at the airport in Athens, she got noticed right away. Nobody even said something to contradict her triumph.

I personally don't agree with the comments about Janine. I think she is certainly free to have her own dreams - whether they reside in the Philippines or Japan or USA is her own choice. Nothing wrong with it! And I admire her for having that clarity of vision and the ambition and drive to go after it! I don't think any of us should be judging her! As long as she was sincere about her preparations for her international competition and acquitted herself with grace through it, she gets an A+ from me. And she certainly did!! Her results were well deserved but my point is that even if she had not placed, I would still have had great respect for her! Results are out of your control -- history is LITTERED with exceptional, deserving candidates who were ignored (and mediocre girls who did well, conversely) -- but what you put is not only in in your control, but I daresay, your obligation!

Now, onto the question of why she lost to Olivia Culpo -- more than anything else, I would say it is just luck and subjective tastes. Happens ALL the time. Take 2018 -- as perfect as Cat was, change the jury and venue and Tamaryn Green could have won. That's just how it goes. Not always, but on some occasions, you have two equally deserving girls and one has to win. So I do think luck had the most to do with it. If one really has to parse it, I thought Janine spoke better, but Olivia had the more beautiful face. In particular, Olivia's beauty and personality is the type that appeals to Americans (and my grouse with Miss Universe has always been the predominantly American (or American propaganda washed) jury). As unappealing as she was to most of us pageant fans, I remember watching Miss Universe 2012 with a large group of non-pageant American friends and from the minute she stepped on stage, they loved her and in particular, they loved her answer. So there you have it!! If you MUST look beyond luck, that is the reason. But nothing to do with Janine's (lack of) character or anything -- there is no way MUO is going to allow a girl who they are not willing to accept as a Miss Universe to get to the top 5.

Olivia also didn't pause. She didn't have to talk about her family. Being fluent in one's language does not equate confidence. I admire those queens who's mother tongue is not english but able to answer the question with sense rather than you speak english since childhood yet they still have difficulty to expound their thoughts. FYI, all queens rehearsed and memorized Q&A. They have a book about it all possible questions. The only advantage of english born speakers is their fluency of the language that some people may equate is as confidence. Just imagine if we switch their situation. Olivia will answer in tagalog and Janine will also answer in tagalog? Who do you think has the edge?

I don't think her personal issues lead to her eventual loss or karma. I'm pretty sure there were other considerations.

Personally, I am not a fan of her as a person. But, she was a good Philippine rep.

Olivia's question was blah... she did the best she could with such a lame question. Still, it's not what she said but how she said it. She's very charismatic, charming and natural. That's a win mix.

In my opinion Olivia won because she was far more beautiful and had more charisma, that's it.

This! Plus her answer was great! Very natural, spontaneous, an answer that connects with the reality of many people, and she is definitely one of the Miss Universe that speaks best.

Janine always came across as very fake and arrogant. When she came back as a guest in Deal or No Deal, she kept speaking in English with a fake accent.

"Luis, like, I choose this briefcase, like I really like that number. Like, I hope we get the, like, 1 million". :%)) :%))

It's funny that among the briefcase holders there were Miss Supranational Mutya Datul, Miss International Bea Santiago and Janine's batchmate, MJ Lastimosa.

Bea Santiago (who lived in Canada for a longer period than Janine's stay in the United States) does not speak with a contrived accent. Not to mention, Bea spoke in Tagalog when she was asked in Tagalog. Janine just tries way too hard, and until now she still tries way to hard to become an American.

She's unrelatable. That's it. Parang out of touch. Very different from the rest of Miss Universe Philippines.

I believe this is about the 'model vs beauty queen' look. Who is more universally appealing. It's not about the answer because both did great - a tad too pageant patty for Janine's, I'd like to add.

I find this the same with Iris and Raquel on Miss Universe '16. Everyone was raving about Haiti's first win but Iris was the beauty queen. Raquel was too much of a model to be the winner.

poker_man wrote:Janine has always been regarded as the "real" Miss Universe 2012 to many pageant fans (most especially Pinoys of course) but watching these videos proved why she lost and why she is nothing more than an opportunist.

You’re the one who seems to have issues, not the real Miss Universe 2012 winner.
