Kudos Carousel!

Postby Handsama » Tue Dec 10, 2019 12:47 am

Now that Miss Universe is over, I must say that in as much as it pains me to say this as a Miss Universe follower, the 2019 edition was that underwhelming to say the least.

I can’t help but make comparisons to Miss Earth after it had one of its best editions this year. Miss Earth isn’t perfect by any means but it continues to evolve for the better and that’s largely due to Carousel’s ability to listen to feedbacks from its most dedicated fans. Sadly, I can’t say the same for IMG.

Just want to comment on a few things...

1. With 8 days of competition, there was barely time to get to know the Miss Universe delegates closer. Only about 10-15 women were highlighted by the sponsors. And good luck getting information from the main Miss Universe thread here where half of the posts were cringeworthy and the other half focused primarily on the perceived frontrunners with the utter exclusion of the rest. Contrast that to Miss Earth where we get to know everyone during the four weeks of competition and where everyone got enough attention from the org and its many sponsors. No one was ignored.

2. Miss Earth has been heavily criticized for putting a lot of weight on a delegate’s communication skills and intelligence which has led to less than popular results in previous years. Well...I must say that Miss Universe has outdone Carousel in this regard but not necessarily in a good way. Imagine how painful it is to cut the 20 semifinalists into half on the basis of 15 second rehearsed oratories. These women prepared so hard to make it through the first cut only to be excluded because they were not able to convey their messages as fluently and as spontaneously in English as those who grew up speaking the language. And now with the even heavier emphasis on Q&A more than looks, I really feel sorry for those don’t speak English well. These women are at a severe disadvantage. Whereas at Miss Earth, the 20 semifinalists are at least able to showcase themselves in swimsuit and evening gown first before the top 10 are chosen to continue into the hashtag segment and the final Q&A.

3. I find it unfair when the women’s background stories are given a lot of weight. In Miss Earth, all that matters is one’s environmental cause so everyone is almost on equal footing during the competition regardless of their backgrounds. In Miss Universe, some women are able to exploit their background stories to appeal to the judges’ emotions and we’ve seen them work.

Miss Universe remains the mother of all pageants in my books. I compare it to that older sibling who everyone looks up to. But I’m somewhat alarmed by some of the changes I’ve seen lately. Anyhoo...what say you? :-D

ADDING TO THIS, MISS EARTH IS THE MOST COVERED, MOST TALKED ABOUT PAGEANT OF 2019 AGAIN (AFTER 2017)

BECAUSE MISS UNIVERSE IS ONLY LESS THEN 2 WEEKS, THE COVERAGE THREAD ONLY REACHED 415 PAGES WHILE MISS EARTH HAS 448 PAGES.

ONE THING TO MENTION AS WELL, MOST BASHERS CRITICIZE THE CAMERA WORK OF MISS EARTH. BUT THIS YEAR, THE MISS UNIVERSE HAS A LOT OF BAD CAMERA SHOTS: ONE TIME THE CAMERA FOCUSED ON SOUTH AFRICA'S NECK, AND THERE ARE OTHER SHOTS THAT WAS BAD. THE VOICE OVER DURING SWIMSUIT WAS A MESS. AND IT SEEMS FOR THE TOP 5 THEY FORGOT THEIR PLACING

THE STAGE FOR MISS UNIVERSE IS SMALL - BUT HAS AN EFFECT OF BEING BIG BECAUSE OF THE MIRRORS ON THE SIDE OF THE STAGE. AND EVEN THOUGH THERE IS AN LED BACKDROP, IT WASN'T THE FOCUS. AND NOTHING ON STAGE SCREAMS ATLANTA, GEORGIA. ONCE AGAIN MISS EARTH WINS THIS ROUND

IF I WAS TO RANK THE WINNERS:

1. MISS EARTH
2. MISS INTERNATIONAL
3. MISS UNIVERSE

Normally i watched the replays of Miss Universe over and over again even if the Philippines didn't make it in the in the semis. The way the show runs plus the equally stunning ladies made me glued on TV for hours. But last Dec 8's live telecast was way too boring if not with South Africa's articulateness and Iceland's cuteness, i would not continue watching.
Where can i send the Bench GC's so you can buy a decent underwear? Act of charity ko na s pagiging basher mo!!!

Miss Universe’s popularity still eclipse all other pageant’s combined.

In a 100% pageant pie, I think Miss Universe still has 90% awareness of the common people so even if the level of production and entertainment is declining, it still commands attention. It is the most popular pageant still, and would still be in the many more years to come.

MW still is the 2nd, 3rd is Miss International. Mostly this is because of their long history.

ME is in 4th, MGI is 5th, MS is 6th.

The truth is, when it comes to popularity, the last three still has to work very hard to reach common people’s awareness.

It is only here and the pageant world where we can compare them, and say that ME surpassed Miss Universe in overall entertainment and relevance factor, but outside and in the real world, the common people doesn’t know about that. What ME has to do is to widen its reach, and make bold steps to be known, to be really known. It will cost them large sums but they have to.
THE BIG FOUR

MISS UNIVERSE-MISS WORLD-MISS EARTH-MISS INTERNATIONAL

I wonder if any of the contestants in Miss Universe had some "thank you" messages posted in their instagram just like what we read from a lot of the Miss Earth delegates. Wala kasing humalungkat sa mga insta stories nila...unlike sa mga loyal nating Earthlings.

Just want to find out if nag-enjoy sila sa 10 days vacation nila sa Atlanta.

I also take issue with the current judging system at Miss Universe. The women are judged by the same group during the preliminaries and the finals. This opens up the system to bias and favoritism. And I just can’t with excluding male judges, even gay ones, as if they are incapable of judging fairly.

What I like about Miss Earth’s judging system is that all three preliminary scoring events are judged by different groups which helps lessen potential bias. And because the finals’ set of judges is also different, the show begins with a clean slate and equal playing field and the top 20 are judged purely based on their performances during the live finals.

I think prior to 2017, an almost the same group of judges evaluated each delegates in the pre-judging for one whole day prior to the coronation night.

Kudos Carousel. They just need an effective marketing strategy for ME to have a bigger audience. Thanks also to different ME only fanpages for their live chats. We were able to know as many delegates as possible because of them.

Honestly, Miss Universe is already like Miss America without the talent competition.
