The 16 finalists for Miss Algeria 2019 have just been revealed by the Miss Algeria ORG, which holds the franchise for Miss World. The girls have been in a boot camp since December 13 in the eastern coastal city of Annaba. The finale will be held on January 4th in the capital city Algiers.

Personal observation: For the first time ever veiled girls have been allowed to compete in this contest, with a record number of 4 contestants hailing from southern Algeria.

ALGER AND BISKRA ARE VERY CUTE. ITS A PITY THE ORGANIZATION ISN'T SERIOUS ABOUT INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION. LAST YEAR'S TITLE HOLDER HAD SO MUCH POTENTIAL.

It’s not a problem. But southern Algeria is sadly extremely conservative and poor, which explains the under-representation of its women in pageantry and modeling. I am surprised to see some of them here, even though they are mostly covered.

Khadija Benhamou is Miss Algeria 2019

Image

26 year old Khadija Benhamou from the Saharan town of Adrar was crowned last night as Miss Algeria 2019 amongst 16 finalists. A crowd favorite for her flamboyant and confident personality, Khadija is the first black contestant to win this title.

Image

First-runner up was Baya Taghlit of France and second runner-up was Feriel Bassa of Annaba.

Image

Anaïs Mehani of Oran was declared as Miss Personality, Yasmine Akkache of Tizi Ouzou as Miss Photogenic, and Baraka Merzaia of Tamenrasset as Miss Talent.

Image

The new queen was crowned by outgoing Miss Algeria 2018 Nihed Markria, who has stated that she could not make it to the 2018 Miss World contest due to administrative issues.

Image

The televised finale took place at the Algerian National Theater Mahieddine Bachtarzi in downtown Algiers. Miss Tunisia 2017 Haifa Ghedir attended the event as a guest of honor.

Image

Soon after being crowned Miss Algeria 2019, Khadija quit her job as a manager in a trendy Algiers restaurant, in order to focus on her new role.

Yes her election spurred a buzz in Algeria. Like almost every year, the winner is being criticized in social media for not being good enough, especially since this year, the winner was styled horrendously and some very unflattering pictures of her were leaked from backstage, which triggered waves of criticism. Some people are interpreting this criticism as racism, which is only true in some instances but many Algerians, including celebrities and officials, are supporting her and campaigning for these racist remarks to stop. However not all criticism should be interpreted as racism in this case. Some like her, some don’t, which is the case with every winner, every year.

Personally, giving my opinion as a pageant fan and regardless of her looks which is a subjective matter, I don’t think she is polished at all to be Miss Algeria and compete in Miss World. Besides her poor styling, she doesn’t seem to have much of an educated background and her interview skills are underwhelming. She often pauses, laughs, and makes grammatical mistakes when answering questions. She is quite the downgrade from the elegant and well-spoken Nihed Markria or Rym Amari.

Like some have mentioned, I do suspect that she was elected to be exploited for publicity purposes and perhaps a political agenda.

The proof is that this year, the panel of jury only consisted of the national director himself (Faycal Hamdad Cherradi), a personal friend of his by the name of Meriem Kadri Khelifati, Nihed Markria (Miss Algeria 2018), and Meriem Litim (Miss Algeria 2006). So nobody outside the organization was invited to be part of this jury panel which is very strange, unprofessional and suspicious.

Image

Overall I have nothing positive to say about this edition at all. It was the most chaotic, unprofessional, cheapest edition of Miss Algeria I have ever seen :|

pretty girl, she can turn into a bombshell, weight loss, toning and media training, I just hope they don't bleach her skin or put make up that make her appear pale

Skin bleaching is not a beauty standard in Algeria.

She just needs to be kept elegant and yes everything else can be worked on. She is growing on me as she is making us discover a region / culture of Algeria that we don’t know much about ;)

She has a different southern accent and a very collected persona despite her detractors. She also gained unprecedented national and international attention for a Miss Algeria, which can play in her favor eventually. Even Algerian governement officials are supporting her (and they never talk about pageantry).

Amongst the interesting revelations from Algerian journalist Farah Yasmine is that Miss Algeria 2014 Sabrine Chouib fled the country and put herself into exile after the trauma of being severely bashed and bullied by Algerians for being “Too ugly”. This explains her disappearance from social media and why she didn’t come to crown her successor. This proves that Algerians are into the habit of bashing their beauty queens no matter their skin tone. And unlike Khadija, nobody supported Sabrine :(

The only thing that really matters is what Master Chef Julia Morley thinks of her. Hopefully she’s one of the anointed ones, so she’s not wasted!

Faycal Hamdad, National Director of the pageant, speaks up about the controversy in TSA:

Image

“When we saw how the situation was escalating, we isolated Khadija, she didn’t know exactly what was going on. She is Miss Algeria, if something bad were to happen to her, if she gets a nervous breakdown, it’s the image of our entire country that will get tarnished.

I don’t think it’s a case of racism rather than people who don’t know how to express themselves. We face the same problem every year. We are very much scrutinized and criticized. Every Miss Algeria is bashed upon her crowning. It’s not a racism issue but the tendency of Algerians to bring down achievers rather than support them.

The contestants were selected based on many criterion. Other than beauty standards, we tried to select a diverse batch of girls in terms of personalities, regions and cultures, so that these girls can share their differences.

We have prepared charity projects and tours for Khadija across many regions of Algeria, but more specifically in the south. She comes from the south, so she has a very important message to convey, a message of peace and national unity.

Other than her participation in the next Miss World, an organization we are affiliated with, Khadija also has other plans that she wants to discuss with her 2 runners-up. Amongst which is a very interesting and grand acting offer.”

Very rough but also very compelling in a way. She will be interesting to watch. I agree that if she loses weight and is styled right, she will be a whole different girl. And I am glad that she is not the typical wallflower we get from North Africa, which will help her stand out at MW.

I am also just really sad that Nihed Makrika did not go to MW. I hope maybe they can still send her this year? She is just perfect, and I really think she could have been top 10 or more at MW

Thanks Jon! I was awaiting your opinion on this ^^

I agree with you about Nihed and I told her she should compete in MW 2019.

The national director actually said Khadija will go to MW 2020, so perhaps it’s still in the works for Nihed to go to MW 2019, granted they can get their “administrative issues” resolved.

That would be great, I think Khadija would also really benefit from the extra preparation time. Nihed will be a crown contender if she goes this year, she is already looking so much more polished than when she won, the extra year will give her the emotional maturity and confidence to really make her presence felt.

How insulting for her title. I never even heard of this pageant. The only thing that gives me some hope is her saying this is her *first* international pageant as Miss Algeria. So hopefully they have plans to send her to Miss World eventually.

THE NEW QUEEN IS ALREADY 26. I SEE NO SENSE IN DELAYING IN PARTICIPATION IN MW UNTIL 2020.

LAST YEAR'S GIRL WAS GREAT BUT IN RETROSPECT IN DONT KNOW IF SHE'D HAVE GONE FAR COMPETING IN THE AFRICAN GROUP WITH UGANDA AND MAURITIUS.

Nihed is our only chance to place at Miss World now. She has years of modeling experience, a great BWAP and an educated background, double majoring in law and economics.

Khadija can still compete at 27 like Venezuela this year, and to be honest, I have no hope for her placing anyways. She is so rough in every aspect and would make a very weak comeback for Algeria. She has no modeling or charity work experience, she is a high school drop out and can’t even speak French, let alone English.

From her interviews it seems she joined Miss Algeria to get famous but doesn’t have any project or goal in mind. She has the right to dream but she is not what we need to place in MW. Her win was a case of positive discrimination, but there is no substance behind it unfortunately.

VENEZUELA ONLY COMPETED AT 27 DUE TO HER LAWSUIT AND THE MANY ISSUES SURROUNDING HER CROWNING. WHAT WOULD BE ALGERIA'S EXCUSE AND HOW WILL IT AFFECT THE FUTURE REPRESENTATIVES WHO WON'T BE ABLE TO COMPETE IN THE YEAR THEY WON?

I AGREE THAT NIHED WAS A GREAT QUEEN...BUT ITS A LOSS BECAUSE THE ORGANIZATION IS NOT PROPERLY MANAGED DESPITE CROWNING IT REPS SO EARLY THEY ALWAYS WITHDRAW IN THE END. BASED ON RECENT HISTORY KHADIJA MIGHT NOT EVEN GET TO COMPETE AT MW ANYWAY AND DESPITE HER SHORTCOMINGS SHE STILL HAS OVER 10 MONTHS TO PREPARE AND DO HER BEST.
