At Miss Universe 1997, 3 of the black candidates (Margot, Verna & Denny) made it to the Top 6, either of these three would had won Miss Universe 1997 and would had made a historic "Black Girl Magic" 3 peat in the next two years when Wendy and Mpule won Miss Universe 1998 and 1999 respectively.
Now we focus on one of the heavy favorites to win Miss Universe 1997 at that time. Verna Vasquez of Curacao was leading the pack in the preliminaries and semifinals by getting high marks in the swimsuit and evening gown round but when it came to the on-stage interview this was the start of her obstacles in getting their territory's 1st win at Miss Universe/Big 5 pageants (highest placement: 1st Runner Up at Miss Universe 1968 and Miss International 2017).
Do you think her communication skills was her reason why she fell short of winning Miss Universe 1997? Had NBC took over the co-owner rights in 1997 instead of CBS. do you think she has the chance to win against Brook Lee since on stage interview is not important factor in choosing the winner?
