BIO

Hoang Thuy (hwang thoo-ee) was born in a poor family in central Vietnam, one of the most affected areas in the world by annual floods and typhoons. As a child, she used to sell cakes on buses and Christmas decorations in churches to help her family's economy. While pursuing an industrial design degree in college, she competed and was chosen by Tyra Banks to become the first Vietnam's Next Top Model winner, which set off a career as one of the most established top models in Vietnam.

With a newfound dream of bringing Vietnamese women to the international stage, she tirelessly tried to expand her career to Europe. For years with many trips, she was alone in the UK with zero English and experience. With nothing but rejections, frustration and tears, she never knew what quitting was and improved herself with each of the hundreds people saying "no". Eventually, she landed a gig, and in turn many other gigs, becoming one of the pioneers for Viet beauties to make it abroad. Representing Vietnam at Miss Universe is another step in her path to further realize that dream, and she is ready to fight like never before for Vietnam.

She has been active in her environmental advocacies, combating the effects of global warming especially in poor regions.

MARCH 2, 2019 - Natasha Beckley, Miss Universe Sierra Leone National Director, confirmed that Marie Esther Bangura (2018 winner) will compete in the 2019 edition of the Miss Universe Pageant. After failing to reach the 2018 edition on time, Bangura was not allowed to compete by the MUO and advised to compete in the 2019 edition instead. Beckley promised an earlier National pageant for Sierra Leone's representative for the 2020 Miss Universe pageant and will use the long period as a preparation for their representatives.
