Denise would have won even if the pageant is held in hell. Her presence and overall packaging is unmatched. Evelina is iconic, memorable, a beauty ahead of her time, but was she a beauty queen? I don't think so. She wasn't the perfect fit for the brand back in 2001, plus, her smile isn't really as appealing, sorry, but those are just facts. I still to this day recognize that Evelina was a formidable competitor and very beautiful, she is legendary, make no mistake about it. However, if she had been a candidate maybe in later editions, I think she would have had a better chance to win, so it's remarkable the fact that she ended in second place behind Denise, because I seriously think USA and Venezuela would have placed higher just due to packaging and sash factor alone. I even remember I was rooting for Miss USA that night, she was the one with Miss Universe frame to me. But then again, I also loved Miss Spain, Miss Venezuela, Miss Nigeria, Miss Greece, and of course, Denise Quiñones, so any of those girls would have been a great winner for me. I just don't get the hate for Denise, she wasn't a surprise winner at all, it was meant to be that way, period. It's the same case of 2004, 2005, 2008, 2010 and many other editions where either the runner up or the winner were perfect.
Here's Denise 16 years later, she's now 36 and looking very beautiful as ever
Miss Universe 2001 FOREVER, till the end of times, sorry if some of you are STILL mad about it. Facts are facts.
