Debate: Beauty Pageants are form of "Symbolic Violence"?

Postby ajsy0203 » Sat Jul 11, 2020 7:54 am

From the documentary "The Hidden Side Of Philippines Beauty Pageants/Cost of the Crown" to the proposal of banning pageants by several Mexican politicians. Do you think the beauty pageants are form of "Symbolic Violence" as they claimed?

Everyone else has a say. Why would someone's personal opinion define the voices of many? Note, not everyone else' life revolves around nor watches a beauty pageant.

This is an article about some Mexican politicians (especially from Mexican Gender Equality Commission) claiming that Beauty Pageants are form of "symbolic violence" and they want to ban beauty pageants.

Critical Beauty Salon's analysis is on point. Basically, banning pageants is depriving women of advancing in society and is taking away their freedom.

Wish the rich Venezuelans in Florida will help these girls!

It’s fat & ugly people who want pageants banned. They should focus on dealing with their insecurities instead of hating on the girls, under the guise of concern for contestants. They’re the fake advocates!

Why do you think MUO is trying so hard to move away from the traditional superficial ways in which the pageant functions? It's because they know the old ways of pageantry are no longer relevant in today's times and if they had continued on the path of the Trump Era, they couldn't have sustained beyond possibly just one more decade.
All this talk about body positivity, inclusion of natural hair, emphasis on the personal achievements or back stories, inclusion of transgender contestants.. all this is MUO's attempt to help the pageant survive in a longer term. We've seen what happened with the VS show!
The people on this forum are often advocating for the Trunp era pageant. Even though they are in majority on the forum, they are a very small minority when it comes to larger global audience. So yes, some aspects of the old way of pageants can be called symbolic violence. But the direction MUO is now moving in is not like that!
