With Miss Jamaica's Miss World Win, Black Women Now Hold Five of The World's Biggest Beauty Pageant Titles

BY TARA LAW
DECEMBER 15, 2019

Black women currently hold five of the biggest beauty pageant titles in the United States, and the world (except for the winners of Miss Earth and Miss International).

When Miss Jamaica, Toni-Ann Singh, was crowned Miss World in London on Saturday, she joined an impressive roster of black women who hold some of the world’s most prestigious pageant titles: Zozibini Tunzi as Miss Universe, Cheslie Kryst as Miss USA, Kaliegh Garris as Miss Teen USA, and Nia Franklin as Miss America (who is scheduled to crown her successor on Dec. 19). It is the first time that black women have held all of these five titles at once.

The reigning Miss Earth is Nellys Pimentel of Puerto Rico, and reigning Miss International is Sireethorn Leearamwat of Thailand.

These wins are particularly significant because of the beauty pageant industry’s troubled history with race. For decades, women of color were banned from participating in some of the biggest pageants, including Miss America and Miss USA. No African American women participated in Miss America until Cheryl Browne represented Iowa in 1970, and a black woman didn’t take the top title until Vanessa Williams‘ victory in 1983.

Just three years ago, Miss Teen USA came under fire after racist tweets written by winner Karlie Hay emerged, and others criticized the lack of diversity among contestants.

Kryst, the current Miss USA (and a top 10 finalist at Miss Universe), said on Good Morning America before Singh’s victory that she’s sometimes frustrated that people don’t understand why the group’s victories are such a big deal.

“I think there are times when I am disappointed, because people will sometime comment on our social media and be like, ‘Why are we talking about your race? You guys are just four, amazing women,'” Kryst said. And I’m like, ‘Yes, we are four amazing women, but there was a time when we literally could not win!’”

In the same interview, Tunzi also said that she’s heard from mothers who have told her, “’My 4-year-old daughter was so excited to see you on stage. And she kept on screaming, ‘You look like me. She looks like me.’”

Singh, who aspires to become a doctor, addressed little girls in her home country and elsewhere on Twitter, encouraging them to believe in themselves.

“Please know that you are worthy and capable of achieving your dreams. This crown is not mine but yours. You have a PURPOSE,” Singh wrote.

The "blacks" are made winners just to appease them, to make pageants politically correct BUT in reality in the eyes of the world and universe these black winners will NEVER be beautiful enough to be considered beauty queens. They were declared winners for political reasons and not because they are physically superior than the others. They are just being used as propaganda.

They can crown hundreds of blacks but at the end of the day beauty is still subjective. I dont find these black girls beautiful but to each his own. It just wont change my standard of beauty. It doesnt mean blacks are not beautiful because i see beauty in any color. I just dont see these queens beautiful for me.... again.... for me. Beyonce, Tyra theyre beautiful yet theyre blacks and i wont complain if they win a beauty title.

It is not yet considered as biggest pageant in USA. It is still carving its name and in due time, they will be recognized.

I also agree that the black crowned queens are not that beautiful. Emanii Davis is more beautiful than them. If Emanii was able to win Miss Earth, then she is the most beautiful black winner this year. Almost there but she stammered her answer.

To black Americans, almost everything is always a racism issue...somebody will post something on social media and a black and now even a latino will bring the race card thing. In major beauty pageants black women even not so pretty ones are actually more favored than the more beautiful "Oriental" women, but you hardly hear these Asian ladies complain about discrimination. Black women from former British colonies do well in Mis World, They only crowned those 2 Chinese ladies because of sponsorship. It is also not surprising that the former British colony India is favored by Julia's group. while Mis USA always include black girls as finalists if not the winner even though there are more gorgeous "Asian" looking girls in the competition.

These "Black" things are being over used now. Common you all just putting malice on it. Only Black feel they are neglected and treated as second class citizens. I say enough now with this. No one is complaining...

How many Black Miss USA have there been since 1990....TEN (90,93,95,00,02,07,08,12,16,17), nearly one out of three titleholders not counting those of Asian and Latina/Hispanic descent and this diversity hire is STILL complaining about how women like her could not win.

All this political correctness is likely one of the reasons why Trump won as President. The "Silent majority" appears to have gotten tired of all "political correctness" that is just being used for propaganda and appeasement of certain sectors and switched to Trump. I would not be surprised if Trump gets re-elected because as one politician said, the Democrats are fielding candidates from "Old Folks Home" that reiterate the same "political correctness" issue but are actually closet "Wall Street" supporters.

I personally think Zozi is beautiful and so was Leila.

Your statement is also exactly why girls like Zozi needed to win. The girls you mentioned are westernized black girls to appeal to the white people.
