MISS AMERICA 2020'S NEW FORMAT DRAWS CRITICISM ON TWITTER, DESCRIBED AS 'CHEAP' AND 'TRASH'
By Melissa Lemieux On 12/19/19 at 10:25 PM EST
In response to both evolving times and declining ratings, The Miss America pageant shifted formats for its 2020 outing—but those changes have hit a sour note with viewers.

The new format removes the evening gown and swimsuit competitions. In place of those events, a "televised job interview" was added. In addition, the pageant now is reminiscent of a reality show competition, involving the judges eliminating the contestants as they stand onstage.

"This feels like the most cheap, homemade, low-budget mess and these women deserve better," observed Stephanie T. Castro.

"So instead of swimsuit, they decided to humiliate the semi-finalists by telling them why they aren't finalists???" said @charharreveld.

"Miss America 2.0 is trash. This is a train wreck, crashed into a dumpster and caught on fire. But just like every disaster, I can't look away. It can't get worse, but I refuse to change the channel and risk missing it go down in flames," noted Kate Gatsby.

Many viewers disliked the way the eliminations were handled, with judges having the contestants line up and either tricking them into thinking they'd be eliminated via negative talk or convincing them they'd been saved until a last-minute swerve informed them of their elimination. The to-their-faces critiques were especially unpopular with viewers.

"Again??? Lining up these women who have worked their entire lives and eliminating one by one down the row? Faking them out by sounding negative at first only to be like sike! youre going through?! This is gross," said Twitter user @cmillllllll.

"Miss America 2.0 is basically a more boring version of America's Got Talent, but everyone has to also scream their resume and solve all the world's social issues during a 2-minute interview," summed up Abigail Stricklin.

I agree.
It’s kinda trashy.
It’s a job interview in public. Absolutely.

For them to eliminate the SS and EG competitions, it was uncalled for leaving the talent competition in. Training on SS and EG was no longer required so it seemed. But the money prizes / scholarship money of $50K for the winner and the runners up draws these beauties to this charade.

I’m just glad that Miss New York did not move forward and win again. That state has been favored to win for the last 6 years.

Miss America 2.0 is all about how well you can express your advocacy, another oratorical contest on national TV.

Both Miss Universe and MAO are heading that way. Miss Universe will have to keep SS and EG competitions otherwise they would lose countries around the world to participate. MA 2.0 is is only a national pageant.

MAO could have asked the girls to strut their SS during semifinals, followed by interview and EG at the same time. Then again, it would look like Miss Universe / MUSA. Ow well..

Change is inevitable but some things wasn't paid off. If I was the producer, I give the Top 15 the Social Impact Initiative pitch before they cut to 10 for Talent then 5 for first round of onstage interview then cut to 2-3 for the final round of onstage interview.

If they want to revert back to tradition, I think the 15-12-10-7(-5) 2009-2018 format will be more effective but The Top 7 will do the social impact pitch before the final question on the Top 5.

Not really
MW is not about talking
Its unpredictable unknown formula about TopModel, BWAP, Talent, H2H or whatever.
MsAmerica is just about talk.
Weird.

What is happening in the world of pageantry? It is not what we all loved and wants. I feel disappointed that it evolved in such a cheap and trying hard to be "political/intelligent" pageant.

In a world full of hypocrisy, trying to be in and be politically involve are such a disappointment. Lets leave pageant alone, let it be the beauty pageant we all once loved.

After this whole “Black Magic” debacle, the very poor hosting of the supposed Olympics of Pageantry in Atlanta, and now this, pageant organizers seem keen on making sure that they lose whatever little interest and respect the mainstream world (and even the pageant community) has for pageantry.

Good job, IMG and the Miss America organization! =c3

=O/

As I said before, like so much of Western media and entertainment, they are now pandering to a non-existent audience and ditching the one they already have. During the Trump era, the pageant became more trashy once he started getting personally involved in the 2000s. Now he sold the pageant,IMG have move it to the opposite end of the spectrum. Why couldn’t they just revert the pageant back to the way it was in the 1980s and 1990s... when it have the perfect blend of class and glamour...with an emphasis on class.

Indeed. The game now is to alienate the remaining, very little following that your pageants have. Good job, indeed! :=p

Truly. It’s not necessary to go to extremes. Ugh!
